In the fall, up to 300 million monarchs travel 3,000 miles from the northeastern US and Canada to an area in the state of Michoacán, Mexico.  All Monarchs east of the Rocky Mountains travel to the oyamel fir trees in this area of Mexico.

The following map shows how far north (white dots) eastern Monarch butterflies must fly from to get to their wintering site (red triangle) in Mexico.  This cumulative map shows the migration path southward with each passing week reflected in darker dots (white = prior to Aug 30th; green = after Oct 24th).
