Dr.
Hines developed and implemented the Anatomy and Physiology lecture and
lab course for the baccalaureate program in nursing at UMKC.
With Jan Rice, RN, MSN as Co Principal Investigator, Dr Hines
has initiated a 3-year project that tests active learning strategies
in anatomy and physiology and pathophysiology. This is an innovative
program that will enhance learning and retention of knowledge in the
sciences.
“Teaching
is a major focus of my academic career. It is an enormous reward to
see students get excited about solving problems in physiology.”
Students at UMKC School of Nursing have the unique advantage of
being taught by a nurse- physiologist with an active research program.
Early in the curriculum, students are exposed to the research process
and the importance of research in making sound clinical decisions. In
the Summer of 2002, a first-year nursing student was awarded one of 12
Summer Research Fellowships by the American Physiological Society to
pursue research in Dr. Hines’ lab. That study will be presented at
the annual Experimental Biology meeting Spring 2003, and will be
submitted for publication.
